Pre-Harvest Intervals (PHI): Why You Must Wait Before Harvesting
PHI is the number of days you must wait between the last pesticide application and harvest. Ignoring it doesn't just risk your buyers' health — it can get your produce rejected and your licence cancelled.

The Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) — also called the Waiting Period — is the minimum number of days that must pass between your last pesticide spray and the day you harvest the crop. Every registered pesticide product in India has a PHI specified on its label, set by the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIB&RC).
Why PHI Exists
Pesticides degrade over time through sunlight, rain, and biological processes. The PHI is the time needed for residue levels to drop below the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) — the maximum concentration of pesticide permitted in food under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011.
Harvesting before the PHI means your produce may carry residues above the MRL. This:
- Poses a health risk to consumers
- Can cause your produce to be rejected at mandis, APMC, or export centres
- Can result in prosecution under the Insecticides Act, 1968
- Can lead to cancellation of your pesticide dealer licence
PHI Varies by Product and Crop
PHI is not one number that applies to all situations. It changes based on:
- The active ingredient — some degrade quickly (2–3 days), others slowly (21–30 days or more)
- The crop — residue absorption differs between leafy vegetables, grain crops, and fruits
- The formulation — WP, EC, SC formulations may have different PHIs for the same active ingredient
Always read the product label. The PHI for that specific product on that specific crop is printed there.
Common PHI Values in Tamil Nadu Crops

Practical Tips for Managing PHI
- Know your harvest date before you spray. Work backwards from harvest. If you're harvesting in 10 days, do not apply a product with a 14-day PHI.
- Write it down. Record the date and product of every spray in a spray diary. This also protects you if there's ever a dispute.
- Use a shorter-PHI product for the last spray cycle. If you have a choice of products, use the one with the shorter PHI closest to harvest.
- Don't assume rain washes it off. Rain does accelerate degradation, but not reliably enough to override the PHI.
- Never spray beyond the recommended frequency. Extra sprays don't increase PHI safety — they increase your cost and resistance risk.
