How to Identify and Control Fall Armyworm in Maize — Tamil Nadu Guide

Fall armyworm has been spreading rapidly across Tamil Nadu maize fields since 2018. Learn how to spot early infestations before they cause 50–70% yield loss, and what to do about it.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) first arrived in India in 2018 and has since become one of the most destructive pests in Tamil Nadu's maize belt — particularly in Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, and Namakkal districts.

How to Identify Fall Armyworm

Early detection is critical. The pest can destroy a crop in days if undetected.

  • Egg masses: Look for 100–200 eggs laid in dome-shaped masses on the upper leaf surface, covered with fine hair-like scales. Masses appear cream or light brown.
  • Young larvae (1st–3rd instar): Pale green, 1–5mm long. Found on younger leaves, scraping the surface and leaving transparent "window pane" damage.
  • Older larvae (4th–6th instar): Brown-black with a distinctive inverted "Y" on the head and four black dots in a square pattern on the 8th abdominal segment. Found deep inside the whorl at this stage — the most damaging phase.
  • Damage sign: "Shot-hole" pattern on leaves (small round holes) and fresh sawdust-like frass (excreta) visible in the whorl. This is the most reliable early indicator.

Why Tamil Nadu Fields Are Especially Vulnerable

Fall armyworm thrives in warm, humid conditions — exactly what Tamil Nadu provides from June to October. The continuous cropping patterns in Dharmapuri and Salem, with little fallow period, allow populations to build throughout the year without a natural break.

Integrated Management Strategy

1. Scout Early — Every 3 Days

Walk your field and check 20 plants at 5 different spots (100 plants total). If more than 5–10% of plants show egg masses or early larvae, begin treatment immediately. Waiting until you see major damage is too late.

2. Use Pheromone Traps

Install fall armyworm-specific pheromone traps at 1 per acre to monitor adult moth activity. Spikes in moth catches predict larval infestations 7–10 days in advance, giving you time to prepare.

3. Chemical Control — Timing Is Everything

Spray when larvae are in the 1st–3rd instar (before they enter the whorl). Once they're deep in the whorl, contact insecticides become much less effective.

  • Direct the spray into the whorl — not just onto the leaf surface
  • Spray in the evening (5–7 PM) when larvae are most active on the plant surface
  • Rotate chemical classes to prevent resistance

4. Observe Pre-Harvest Intervals

Always check the PHI printed on the product label and stop spraying accordingly before harvest. Selling maize with pesticide residues above MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) can result in rejection at procurement centres.

  • Frass in the whorl = fall armyworm is present. Act immediately.
  • Spray into the whorl, not onto leaves
  • Evening application is more effective than morning
  • Scout every 3 days during the growing season
  • Never apply less than the recommended dose — it accelerates resistance
